Volleyball is actually one of the sports considered as an official Olympic sport. However, it has been contested as an indoor sport since 1964 at the popular Summer Olympic Games. And it is only in 1996 that it has been contested as an outdoor, beach sport.
Yes, at Olympic Games, volleyball games can be classified as either an indoor sport or an outdoor, beach sport. And each can be classified then as either for men or for women.
The indoor volleyball for men was the first type to become really famous. And along with its popularity was also the fame of the Soviets in the sport that significantly boosted. They were actually the champions of the first two editions of the indoor volleyball Olympic tournament for men.
The indoor volleyball for women was also a hit. And its first opening edition in 1964 was won by the Japanese which happened to be the hosts then.
While the outdoor, beach volleyball for men was added to the Olympic Games only in 1996. Its first game was won by players from U.S.
And the outdoor, beach volleyball for women was also added to the Olympic Games in 1996. Its first game was won by the Brazilian volleyball players.
