Some were actually surprised to know how the league was able to attract players most especially American and Canadian players outside North America. Well, it was actually just a replacement for the Ice hockey Bundesliga, also called as DEL – Die 1. Bundesliga.

The Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) or German Ice Hockey League can be considered a distinct or one of a kind league. Not like many others, it is an independently-run league, completely owned and fully operated by its 16 member teams.

Per season, the league can only admit one 2nd Bundesliga team unless there are more clubs needed. Two clubs can be accepted in case the league falls short in number of participating teams, say below fourteen.

Since 2006-07 season, no team can be instantly eliminated from the league as owner or operator. A team can only lose its status in the league by non-compliance of the “DEL’s basic requirements to remain in the league”.

Here are the requirements:

• A written application for membership;
• “On ice qualification” or making it to the championship in the 2nd Bundesliga;
• Financial qualification;
• A stadium meeting DEL standards;
• Formation of an ordinary company considering the league is made up of franchises;
• Development program for young players; and
• Purchase of a license that is presently at € 800,000.00

Now, you may have realized that the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) or German Ice Hockey League is truly like no other. It has lots of followers and it is unique for not having just one owner or operator. It is incomparable. It is the league to check out at Bwin!
